Meet our Lifeguards

  • Mark Burgess

    Favourite wild swimming spot:
I recently spent some time in New Zealand and found wild swimming spots everywhere. My favourite discovery was Bob’s Cove, near Queenstown in the South Island.

  • Jo Bell

Favourite wild swimming spot: Waresley obvs! One of my most favourite places to swim is also Watergate Bay, Cornwall, UK.

  • Anna Auckland

Favourite wild swimming spot: Waresley of course! Further afield it would have to be Gwithian Beach in Cornwall. It’s vast and wild and bodyboarding there is so much fun.

  • Connel Bell

Favourite wild swimming spot: The sea is my happy place. I grew up surfing, albeit in the warm Indian Ocean, and I am always drawn back to the sea.

The Benefits of Cold Water

Physical Benefits

  • Boosts circulation: improved blood flow as the body tries to warm itself up, encouraging better circulation

  • Reduces inflammation: cold exposure can reduce inflammation and muscle soreness after exercise, aiding recovery. It also provides relief in disease caused by inflammation

  • Increases metabolism: cold exposure stimulates brown fat, which burns calories to produce heat, boosting metabolism

  • Improves insulin sensitivity: research indicates that cold water exposure may be a potential therapy for diabetes by increasing the amount and activity of brown fat

  • Improves immune function: regular cold water swimming has been linked to enhanced immune system activity, helping the body fight off illness

  • Provides pain relief: cold water causes vasoconstriction, temporarily numbing nerve endings and providing relief from pain.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: cold water swimming triggers the release of endorphins, improving mood and helping to reduce stress

  • Improves mental resilience: regular exposure to cold water helps you to build mental toughness and adaptability, as your body learns to cope with discomfort

  • Boosts mental clarity: many people report a feeling of clarity and mental freshness after cold water swims

  • Improves mood: cold water immersion positively impacts depression through endorphin release, mobilisation of the sympathetic nervous system, social interaction and being in nature.

FAQs

Is the lake clean?

The lake at Waresley Park was designed in the 1700’s and is naturally spring fed from the surrounding hills. We regularly test that the quality of the water is suitable for swimming.

Is there a lifeguard on duty?

We always have a trained open water lifeguard on duty during our wild swimming sessions. The lifeguard will also be trained in first aid and safety procedures.

Do you have changing facilites?

We set up private changing tents for swimmers to use should they require. We also have fresh running water down at the lake.

What if the weather is bad?

We will still run wild swimming sessions in the rain, however for safety reasons the session might be cancelled during adverse weather conditions like thunderstorms.

What should I wear for wild swimming?

Swimsuits are the most common attire, we would recommend a wetsuit in the winter months. Additionally, water shoes can be helpful on the lake floor. Please also bring a towel and warm clothes.

Do I need to be an experienced swimmer?

We recommend that participants have basic swimming skills. Always ensure you're comfortable in the water, and if in doubt, stay close to the shore or use a flotation device. The lake has some shallow and deeper areas, please ask the lifeguard for advice if unsure.
